Human Resource support – for small businesses of 10 – 50 employees

Strategic Human Initiatives, Inc. is the outsourced Human Resource Department for small business. Our mission is to provide HR assistance to small businesses that don’t have a dedicated HR professional, maximizing the success and profit of the business through excellent people processes.

Many small businesses (50 employees or less) don’t have the need for a full time human resource professional, however, they do need guidance and assistance with employee related issues and requirements. With the many regulations regarding employees, an employer can hardly afford to be unaware of responsibilities, or negligent in complying with government regulations.

Employees impact every aspect of business…and not just because you pay them a salary or wage.

  • Accuracy
  • Safety
  • Customer/Client service
  • Co-worker relationships
  • And many more…

Each of these aspects translates into a dollar value that impacts the P & L statement of a company - in a positive way if they are good, or a negative way if they are bad.

Employee problems often manifest themselves in:

  • Insurance claims
  • Lawsuits
  • Lost business through valuable customers
  • Lost talent in valuable employees that leave
  • Wasted marketing efforts and dollars

Support available in the following areas…

Employee Manuals: Developing a new manual or updating/customizing an outdated manual.

Document Review: Reviewing critical files and documents for accuracy and compliance with federal and state regulations.

Workplace Investigations: When employees bring issues to you or one of your managers such as harassment claims or perceived harassment claims, safety issues, claims of violence, etc. these need to documented and addressed promptly, thoroughly, and appropriately.

Manager/Supervisor Training: Training managers and supervisors properly in key areas can improve their decisions, which can mitigate the employer’s risk of lawsuits.

Benefits Administration: Assistance with benefits (voluntary and involuntary) including bill reconciliation, documentation, filing, etc. Also educating employees on the true value of their benefits through a document called the “Hidden Paycheck.”

Compensation Planning: Pay-for-performance planning, total compensation including incentives, benefits, and work environment.

Workforce Planning: Analyzing your workforce to determine future needs, how to prepare for them, identifying high-potential candidates, and developing potential leaders.

Human Resource Auditing: A four-step process that includes information gathering, evaluation, analysis, and action planning.

Consulting can be obtained on an hourly basis "as needed," or on retainer by paying a monthly fee for ongoing, defined activities.

Human Resource consulting and support might look like this…

  • The consultant performs the duties of an HR Manager a prescribed number of hours per week or month, depending on the required work to be done.
  • The consultant comes in and trains your administrative staff to perform most of the duties accurately and be a point of contact for questions as they come up. In this scenario it is recommended that the consultant come in periodically (ex. monthly or quarterly) to determine if any issues need attention.

With ten (10) years of experience in human resources in both publicly traded and privately owned companies, Darlene has seen many employment related issues. Experience has helped her understand the importance of good employment practices to enhance and improve the success of the business. Her focus is on helping businesses realize financial results that are measurable through the application of excellent people processes.
